PROGRAM PILLAR 02 | DROHA UGANDA STRATEGIC PLAN 2024–2028

Fostering Community Savings and Financial Self-Reliance

Expanding micro-credit access, asset building, and women’s economic leadership through Saving With a Purpose Investment Clubs (SWIPICs) across Eastern Uganda.
FINANCIAL LANDSCAPE

Overcoming Financial Exclusion in Rural Communities

Across the Busoga subregion, rural smallholders, youth, and women face severe structural barriers to formal financial services. High collateral requirements, prohibitive interest rates, and distance from traditional banking institutions leave vulnerable households without safe mechanisms to save or access credit.

Droha Uganda’s Saving With a Purpose Investment Clubs (SWIPICs) address this challenge directly. We establish self managed, community owned financial hubs that turn modest weekly savings into revolving loan funds. By prioritizing women's participation and leadership, SWIPICs build local capital, finance micro-enterprises, and buffer families against climate and economic shocks.

CORE INTERVENTIONS

Three Pillars of Our Financial Inclusion Model

Community Led Micro-Savings

Structuring weekly share-purchase mechanisms that allow rural households to build discipline, secure emergency reserves, and accumulate investment capital locally.

Affordable Revolving Credit & Asset Building

Providing low interest, collateral free micro loans to members to purchase agricultural inputs, expand vocational trade enterprises, and finance urgent family needs.

Financial Governance & Capacity Building

Training executive committees in ledger management, constitutional governance, loan appraisal, and transparent share out calculations to ensure long-term club sustainability.

OPERATIONAL FRAMEWORK

Key Mechanisms of the SWIPIC Model

1. Women Centered Leadership & Governance

Prioritizing female membership (targeting 80% across all 250 clubs) and electing women to key executive roles (Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary) to ensure financial returns directly benefit family nutrition, education, and health.

2. Social Fund & Emergency Buffers

Integrating an auxiliary social fund alongside core share savings to provide zero-interest grants or immediate loans for medical emergencies, funeral expenses, and sudden disaster recovery.

3. Enterprise Credit & Value Chain Integration

Directly linking SWIPIC loan cycles to Droha Uganda’s vocational graduates and smallholder farmers, enabling entrepreneurs to buy raw materials, tools, and agricultural inputs without predatory debt.
