PROGRAM PILLAR 03 | DROHA UGANDA STRATEGIC PLAN 2024–2028

Protecting Natural Resources and Building Climate Resilient Communities

Advancing climate smart agriculture, renewable energy adoption, food security, and environmental advocacy across rural communities in Eastern Uganda.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONTEXT

Safeguarding Rural Livelihoods Against Extreme Weather and Environmental Shock

Smallholder farming families across Jinja, Kamuli, Mayuge, and surrounding districts rely directly on predictable rainfall and fertile topsoil. However, rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, unpredictable seasonal shifts, and soil degradation severely threaten household food security and income stability.

Droha Uganda’s Climate Justice & Environmental Resilience program equips smallholders and rural communities with adaptive tools and sustainable technologies. We promote climate smart agriculture, soil conservation, clean energy access, and community-led reforestation to ensure farming families build long-term environmental and economic resilience.

CORE INTERVENTIONS

Four Pillars of Our Climate Resilience Strategy

Climate Smart Agriculture & Agroforestry

Training smallholder farmers in drought-resilient crop varieties, organic soil regeneration, intercropping, and tree planting to restore soil fertility and boost yield stability.

Food & Nutrition Security

Establishing household vegetable gardens and multi-tier nursery beds to provide continuous, nutrient dense produce for pregnant women, lactating mothers, and young children.

Renewable Energy & Clean Technology

Accelerating the distribution and adoption of clean energy solutions, including solar home systems and energy efficient cookstoves, to reduce deforestation and indoor air pollution.

Climate Policy Advocacy & Reforestation

Mobilizing youth and community groups for watershed restoration, tree planting drives, and local climate adaptation policy engagement across Busoga.

ADAPTATION PRACTICES

On the Ground Environmental Solutions

1. Agroforestry & Watershed Restoration

Integrating native tree species into active crop fields to reduce soil erosion, retain ground moisture, create natural windbreaks, and supply sustainable timber without clearing indigenous forests.

2. Solar Lighting & Clean Energy Stoves

Replacing kerosene lamps and wood charcoal with solar kits and clean cookstoves lowering fuel expenditures for rural households while protecting women and children from toxic smoke inhalation.

3. Urban & Peri-Urban Kitchen Gardening

Promoting space efficient vertical gardens, sack mounds, and drip-irrigated plot designs to ensure urban and peri-urban families harvest fresh vegetables year-round regardless of rainfall irregularity.

THEORY OF CHANGE

Building Environmental Resilience Step-by-Step

01
STEP 1

Vulnerability Mapping

Assessing ecological risks, deforestation rates, and agricultural vulnerabilities in rural parishes.

02
STEP 2

Agroforestry Skilling

Training farmers in soil conservation, drought tolerant crops, and seedling integration.

03
STEP 3

Clean Energy Access

Deploying solar home kits and efficient cookstoves through SWIPIC financing.

04
STEP 4

Nutritional Security

Achieving protected topsoil, resilient crop yields, and sustained family nutrition.
